[Ingredient Spotlight] Shea Butter – A Skin Care Cure-All?

by When Beauty on November 11, 2021

I’m sure anyone reading this right now has seen in an aisle where there’s at least one product that uses shea butter as an ingredient. Shea butter isn’t something new in the beauty industry. Due to its highly moisturizing benefits, it is used in many skin and hair products.

What it is

Shea butter comes from the kernels of karite trees, which are native to West Africa. The ivory-colored butter is basically fat that is extracted from the nuts after they are dried, crushed, roasted and then pressed into a liquid, which is then whipped and kneaded into a thick butter. Besides using it as a moisturizer or lotion, since it is edible, shea butter is also used to cook with in some African countries.

Skin Benefits

Shea Butter contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties like triterpenes. These properties help aid with collagen loss, skin irritations, and cell proliferation. There have been some studies that suggest that shea butter can help fight against wrinkles. It is also a type of emollient, which means that it helps contain moisture in the skin leaving it smooth and soft. After applying shea butter, it acts as a “plumping” agent by restoring lipids and rapidly absorbs into the skin. Due to its high concentrations of linoleic and oleic acid, they balance each other out so that after application your skin won’t look oily. In addition, shea butter is believed to stop keloid fibroblasts (aka scar tissues) from reproducing while stimulating healthy cell growth. This is why shea butter is popular among pregnant women since it helps to minimize the appearance of stretch marks.

I always thought Shea butter was too thick to use and that it wouldn’t work for my skin. I know my skin would love the extra nourishment, firming and definitely plumping up. Thanks for the break down of Shea butter and pointing me to a product that sounds perfect for me!

I had no idea. I always assumed that it was too rich and would clog my pores and cause me to breakout. Thanks for this info!!!
